Decimomannu's airport is situated in a strategic position. In a few minutes of flight, several areas employed as military training ranges are reachable where it is possible to operate in air to air, air to ground flights and low level navigation. In the map below it is possible to see where these training ranges are situated around Decimomannu air base.

Training ranges:
D33 - Usually used for training of normal navigation and also low navigation.

D40 - It is the main range where there are ACMI activities, so it is here where there is the main training air to air activity of the planes based on Decimomannu.

R39 ex P39 - It is a prohibit area, no planes can enter, only if it is authorized. In this area there is main activity of Poligono Interforze di Salto di Quirra/Perdasdefogu (PISQ), where missiles, laser guided bombs and drone are used for training and testing. Many weapon's systems are tested in this range. Telemetry and radar systems are the best support for training and test flights of planes based on Decimomannu.

R39 ex R16 - Extension of P39, this air and sea space is used essentially for the activities of the PISQ: drone, missiles and testing of launched weapons.

R46 - This area is the range of Capo Teulada, an important training center situated in one of the most beautiful place of the southern Sardinia. The morphology of land allows several kind of operations in the area like training airship, tanks and soldiers, anphibius operations etc... That's why many international military exercises are played here.

R54 - It is a wide area where the planes based at Decimomannu, begin their training activities on ACMI or on Capo Frasca range, but also it offers safety corridors for navigation from/to the ranges.

R59 - This is the range of Capo Frasca. Main operations are bombing on the ground and the use of guns onboard. The range offers a series of targets useful for it. Two control towers manage the air traffic envolved in the training sessions.
